Bessie Smith was a blues singer of the 1920s..
Apart from the fact that they were both black female artists from the south, not much.
Bessie was educated in the school of hard knocks, Zora had at least one college degree.
Bessie was a singer, Zora was a journalist and author.
Bessie died fairly young & while still well known. Zora died much older, after many years of obscurity.
I’m unaware of Bessie’s political views, but doubt she was a conservative if she had any political position. Zora was a republican who opposed Brown vs. the Board of Education, and integration in general.
Bessie was lauded for her art. Zora was shunned or simply ignored for much of her career.
Oh, they were both active during the twenties and thirties.
